You Can Help!

A project of this size needs the support of the entire community. Without the much-appreciated hours generously given by people like you the playground would not be possible. This page lists several of the options for people who would like to help with this park.

Help Us Build

Individual Volunteer Form    |    Group Volunteer Form

In the space of a few days (Summer, 2009), Leathers’ consultants will work on site with you and a small army of enthusiastic volunteers of various skill levels to transform an empty patch of ground into something magnificent: your own community-designed and community-built project. The project will rise before your eyes in just six days of carefully coordinated construction. We need your help to make it happen. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never even picked up a hammer; there are jobs for everyone - youth included. Your efforts will create a playground that will be enjoyed by thousands of people for many years.

Even if you don’t know exactly what day or shift you can work, PLEASE fill out the volunteer form ASAP so we know we can count on you sometime during the build. Click one of the links above to fill out the volunteer form right here online!

Construction Captains

Construction captains are volunteers who work alongside the construction consultants, overseeing and instructing crews and helping to maintain quality. They make it possible for Leathers' consultants to keep hundreds of volunteers working efficiently. Strongly committed captains take care of the details that make working on a project fun, safe, and productive.

In short: Captains are an indispensable part of construction!

Some captains will have tasks that involve complex and precise carpentry. Others will oversee work that requires no carpentry skills at all. All, however, will spend time supervising and instructing others - sometimes 2 people, sometimes 20 or more.

Captains must enjoy working with people, be strongly committed to the project, and be willing and physically able to “go the distance” during construction. They should also be organized, flexible, and able to keep their wits and humor about them under difficult circumstances. Captains must be present for all days of construction from 7 am until 8 pm.

Being a construction captain is a very rewarding experience and a great way to be directly involved in the volunteer-built process. If you are interested, or would like more information, fill out the “Construction Captains” section on the volunteer form or call Kendall at (435) 753-9008.

Steering Committee

Want to get in at ground level?

We are looking for dedicated people to form the steering committee for this project. The responsibilities have been broken down into several manageable sub-sections. If you would like to help out with the project between now and construction, please call Kendall at (435) 753-9008. You could chair a committee or be a support member. The coordinators of all of the sub-committees will make up the playground steering committee.

A project this large needs your talents. Click the link below to see a list of playground committees. You can decide which fits your interests and abilities.

Childcare

Childcare is one of the most important parts of construction. If childcare is well organized, creative, and fun, everyone - children and parents alike - will have a great time. Don't think of childcare as babysitting. Think of it as providing a circus of activities, games, and enjoyable learning experiences for children. Plan on the kind of childcare that will make volunteers want to work longer because their kids are having so much fun.

If you would like to help with childcare, please fill out the appropriate section on the volunteer form or call Kendall at (435) 753-9008.

Food

Construction should be a time of festivity - not one of drudgery - and good food can make the difference. We will be providing meals, snacks, and drinks for people on the construction. If you would like to help with the coordination of meals or if you would like to provide a meal or donate food, please contact Amy Hochberg at (434) 755-9964.

Tools

We need you and your tools!

We need to borrow tools for the build week, Summer, 2009. We guarantee that your tools will be returned in as good or better condition as we received them, or we will replace them. That’s a promise! We have set aside funds for tool replacement and repair and will be using our own drill bits, router bits, and saw blades. In addition, tools will be safely stored and locked and we will be arranging for 24-hour security on the tool trailer.

Click here for a list of tools needed, or call Kendall at (435) 753-9008 for more information.

Donate

The accessible Adventure Playground will only be possible because of generous contributions from people like you. We appreciate your desire to contribute. There are a variety of donation opportunities available to you: make a donation, personalize a picket ($30), adopt a component, or donate in kind. The Whittier Community Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All contributions are tax deductible. Click here to be directed to the main donation page.

All contributions go directly toward the cost of building the playground. Rest assured that your donation will make a difference in the lives of children (both disabled and not) and families for many years.

Thank You!
